Image: Footed lamp with lions, earthenware, 6th century
Description: A Chinese footed lamp made of earthenware with relief decoration under a green and brown glaze, made during the late Northern Dynasties or Sui Dynasty (i.e. second half of the 6th century AD). The lions seen here are depicted as defenders of the Buddhist faith. The two types of lotus petal reliefs seen at the bottom of the vessel represented a popular motif in 6th century Buddhist art.
