Description: This is a slightly cropped image of part of a group of 101 African-American United States Army Air Forces officers of the 477th Bombardment Group (Medium) at Freeman Field, Indiana, about to board air transports to take them to Godman Field, Kentucky. The officers were under arrest for refusing to sign a document acknowledging that they had read a regulation denying them access to an all-white officers' club. The photo was taken in April 1945, probably by Master Sergeant Harold J. Beaulieu, Sr., who hid a camera in a shoebox. (See James C. Warren, The Freeman Field Mutiny, ISBN 0-9641067-2-8, p. 93.) A similar photo taken by Beaulieu appeared in the Pittsburgh Courier. Photos taken at the scene by another African-American photographer reportedly were destroyed by a white officer. (Warren at p. 92.)
