Description: Photo of Gay Head Lighthouse at its new location. From late May, 2015, to early June - the threatened Gay Head Lighthouse was relocated approximately 180-feet back from the eroding cliff's edge. It is estimated that it will be 130 years before the lighthouse is again threatened by erosion. The hill in the foreground is made of semi-impervious compacted fill to control water drainage from the disturbed site and minimize erosion of the clay cliffs. The lighthouse location in this photo sits on steel beams at an elevation that is equal to the light's previous elevation. This ensures that the light's signal will continue to reach its historic navigation destination out to sea. A foundation will be built beneath the raised light and back filled to its previous historic height around the light's granite stone foundation.
