Description: Grave of Sir Edward Appleton This grave in Morningside cemetery, Edinburgh, is of Nobel prize winner Sir Edward Appleton, (1892 - 1960). A native of Bradford he was principal and vice-chancellor of Edinburgh University, awarded the Nobel prize for physics in 1947 for his discovery of the 'Appleton Layer' in the upper atmosphere. This is extremely important in radio communications and the development of radar. There are few enough graves marking the last resting places of Nobel prize winners from the UK and fewer still in Scotland.
