Text Appearing Before Image: elf, is so large in all its details andso admirably proportioned that only a careful examination gives an adequateidea of its vastness. Within its walls are contained practically everything thatis necessary for the wTell-being of a large community, except sleeping accommo-dations, and through its waiting rooms and exits, tens of thousands of travelerspass every day. So perfectly planned for its purpose and so thoroughly built isit, however, that an army of officers and clerks find it one of the quietest andpleasantest working places in New York. Not a sound of the immense trafficreaches the ears of the general officers of the company, though they can step totheir windows at any hour of the day, and look down upon trains arriving anddeparting with crowds of passengers from all parts of the country. The location of Grand Central Station is, however, its unique advantage. R. 13 equalled this building, but there is not in America to-day another such location.Standing, as it does, almost exactly in the centre of the population of the city,with the greater part of the fashionable residence portion above it, and all of thebusiness portion below it, Grand Central Station is exactly the right thing in theright place. A traveler can arrive in the early morning here, get his breakfast in the res-taurant, and then start down-town in a cab, or on the street cars or by the ThirdAvenue Elevated Railway, without even stepping from under cover. He canreach any probable destination in the city within half an hour, and even on arainy day without wetting the sole of his shoe. If he arrives, accompanied byladies, in the afternoon or early evening, to attend an entertainment, he will findany number of carriages awaiting him under the big awnings, and will be athis entertainment in from five to twenty minutes.
