Description: Henry B. Clarke House in Chicago (c. 1836). It is generally considered the oldest building in Chicago, although it has been moved twice (part of the Noble-Seymour-Crippen House is older but wasn't built within city). Clarke operated a hardware store and died of cholera in 1849. His widow, Carolina, lived in the house for another 11 years. She added many of the Greek Revival details. It was first moved in 1871 to 45th and Wabash in Hyde Park Township--a fortuitous move considering the event that would soon engulf the city. In 1977, the city purchased the house and moved it back as close as it could to the original site. This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 71000290.
