Description: Closeup of a LNB (low noise block) on a Hughes Directway satellite dish on the roof of a convenience store in Mount Vernon, Washington, USA. The Hughes Direcway service provides broadband satellite internet service for businesses. This device receives the microwave signal from the satellite after it is focused by the dish, amplifies it so it is stronger, and converts it to a lower frequency so it can be sent by a coaxial cable into the building. The microwaves are collected by the corrugated horn antenna at front and conducted by waveguide into the device. The steps or corrugations visible on the inside surface of the horn reduce the beam width, create a more symmetrical beam pattern, and reduce cross-polarization. The complicated mechanism at bottom allows the LNB to be positioned precisely at the focus of the dish.
