Description: A chart of whaling by Japan from 1985-2016. Brydes, Fin, Minke, Sei and sperm whale catches in the Antarctic, North-West Pacific and coastal Japan. Under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (ICRW), a global ban on commercial whaling has been in effect since 1986. Exceptions are made: Under formal objection to the ICRW; By special permits issued by a member country for scientific research; For aboriginal sustinence. The catch in '85, '86, and about half of '87 were "under objection"; the rest are under the "scientific permit" exception. For the scientific permits, in accordance with the Convention, the Japanese Government grants an annual quota for scientific research; the whale meat by-product is sold for domestic consumption.
