Description: Hong Kong Museum of History.

As World War II came about, and Japan's imperial ambitions had European colonies of Southeast Asia in sight (including Hong Kong), conflict was inevitable. In 1941, Japan dropped this leaflet throughout Hong Kong, demanding that the British surrender. The British resisted. Hong Kong was very lightly defended, and with Japan already occupying much of China, it was only a matter of time before Hong Kong would fall. On Christmas 1941, Japan took over Hong Kong.

Much of the exhibit space here is dedicated to the hardships during the Japanese occupation, including forcible resettlement of many residents to Japanese-occupied parts of China, deterioration of city infrastructure, and Japan's strict control of residents. Japan's monetary policies also resulted in hyperinflation in Hong Kong, further compounding misery.
