Description: This is a photo of the Kalmyk khurul, or community hall, at the Tsagan Aman settlement in the Astrakhan region. The wood-based, architectural design of this khurul was strongly influenced by rural Russian church architecture. This khurul was destroyed by the Bolsheviks and was only recently replaced several years ago. A picture of the new Buddhist khurul can be found at [1]. pre-1917 image
