Image: Lake Pyramid algal bloom (Copernicus)

Description: This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 16 September 2021, shows a massive algal bloom ongoing in Nevada’s Lake Pyramid. Lake Pyramid is affected by algal blooms every year. The phenomenon is mainly associated with cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, which, in large concentrations, can be harmful to human health. The 2021 bloom is so massive that the authorities urged the population to avoid contact with the lake water. Data from Copernicus missions are particularly well suited to detecting and monitoring Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) worldwide.
