Description: This pictures shows a lens with focal length of 50 mm and different aperture settings. Changing the aperture by one stop changes the aperture area by a factor of 2 (the area at stop f/1.4 is twice as big as the area at stop f/2.0). Each stop is specified by the diameter of the aperture as fraction of the focal length. At stop f/1.4 the aperture has a diameter of 50 mm/1.4 ~ 35.7 mm. The diameter as well as the fraction changes by a factor of square root two from one stop to the next one. The lens is a Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D.
