Description: TIPTON LINDSAY'S STORY. According to Tipton Lindsay, spoken of above. the party after capturing Sonoma, took down the Mexican flag and proceeded to manufacture one to put up In Its place. They purchased at an Italian store three yards of unbleached domestic, and a young Mr. Todd, who was with them with red keel (for they had no pencils) made a star in the upper left-hand corner It looked so blank, however, that some one suggested that they paint a grizzly bear thereon, which Mr. Todd proceeded to do with the same red keel. The bear was represented with his month open, as though he was about to make war upon the star. The flag still seemed to be unfinished. It was thought that a border would add to it, and this George W. Williams furnished with one of is red flannel shirts, which was torn in strips and a narrow border sewed on the top. bottom and outer end and that flag was then and theie raised. -San Francisco Call, 7 September 1890
