Description: Schematic view of the position of the moon relative to Aldebaran and nearby stars in the Taurus constellation. Data from Stellarium.org for 9th September 2020, as seen from Saskatoon, Canada .Left image 00:00 CST. Right image 05:00 CST. The lunar distance (dotted line) is measured, usually with a sextant, as the angle between the edge of the moon and the target star. After corrections for parallax and other factors, the resulting distance is the same for any location on the planet, and provides a measure of absolute time that can be conmpared with local time to determine longitude.
