Description: The Australian vessel MV Malaita shortly after she had been torpedoed by the Japanese submarine RO-33 off Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on 29 August 1942. Only one casualty was sustained, the chief steward with two broken legs. The vessel was towed into port on the following day. On 15 September, Malaita proceeded under her own power to Cairns, Australia, arriving 20 September and having steamed the 790 miles from Port Moresby at an average speed of 7 knots. She arrived at Sydney on 13 November 1942. The extent of her damage was so severe that repairs were not undertaken until October 1945. After the repairs were completed in April 1947 she resumed trade to New Guinea and remained in this service until being sold for scrap in 1971.
