Description: The Murasaki Shikibu Diary Emaki (紙本著色紫式部日記絵巻, shihonchoshoku Murasaki Shikibu nikki emaki). This is part of the handscroll located at the Gotoh Museum in Tokyo which consists of three illustrations and three pages of text. Color on paper. The scroll has been designated as National Treasure of Japan in the category paintings. 21.0cm x 46.4cm. The scene shown is: "Evening of Kankō 5, 11th month, 1st day (December 1, 1008). Ika-no-iwai (celebration 50 days after birth in which father or maternal grandfather make the baby eat mochi) of the Imperial Prince. Painting of Empress Shōshi holding the young imperial prince (Atsuhira-shinnō, the later Emperor Go-Ichijō) in her arms and court ladies inside a shinden partitioned off by kichō with design of decaying trees.
