Description: The chart show a compilation of net emissions (represented by plus signs) and net absorption (represented by minus signs) for a range of forest bioenergy pathways, over short, medium and long term, for coal and natural gas alternative/reference scenarios. The emissions are collected from a number of studies, and compiled by EU's Joint Research Center. Original text: "There is a large variability in the literature results for fossil fuel parity times. This is due to differences in the characteristics of the forest system considered (growth rate, management), in the carbon pools included, in the system boundaries definition and in the reference baseline used in the analysis. Although all these parameters play a relevant role in the calculations, the studies reviewed can be summarized in a qualitative way [...]. The results attained are strongly correlated with the following parameters: the fossil fuel replaced, efficiency of the biomass utilization, the future growth rate of the forest, the frequency and intensity of biomass harvests and the initial landscape carbon stock."
