Description: In the late 1930s, Philip Kerr, 11th Marquess of Lothian, bequeathed his house to the nation for the express purpose of creating a residential adult college to provide a non-vocational education for students of a working-class background. The College opened in 1937 and continues to serve its original purpose. Its warden between 1949 and 1955 was the poet Edwin Muir.
