Description: Newton Tower Newton Tower, at the junction of King Street and Main Street, goes back to the days when Newton and Ayr were separate towns, each with its own Burgh Council chambers. The 2 burghs were amalgamated in 1873, when the Newton chambers became redundant. The building was removed to make way for a new road system. Newton Tower, all that's left of the chambers, now acts as a traffic island at an extremely busy junction in Ayr. Viewed from the side of the road carrying incoming traffic to the town centre.
