Description: A North Eastern Railway electric steeplecab locomotive (Class ES1), commissioned in 1902, built in 1903, operational from 1905, built by the British Thomson-Houston company with sub-contractor Brush Electrical Engineering Co. One of a pair of locomotives to work on Tyneside, north-east England, hauling very heavy mineral trains to the docks up and down a very steep gradient. This example, NER No.1, is preserved by the National Railway Museum, and was photographed on 9 April 2008 at the Locomotion museum, Shildon.
