Description: Novum Amsterodamum 1650 (New Amsterdam in New Netherland) painting by Laurens Block. In the foreground are two ships of the Dutch West India Company (WIC). In the background is New Amsterdam (left side) and mostly green hills and forests of Manhattan Island (right side). New Amsterdam received city rights on February 2, 1653. Watercolor and brown and black ink over black chalk on ivory paper, laid on four other layered sheets. This was a gift of C.E. Detmold to the New-York Historical Society.
