Description: Looking across the south walls of the Old Stone Fort near Manchester, Tennessee, in the Southeastern United States. The structure's interior and borrow ditch are on the left. On the right, the ridge slopes downward toward "the moat" (a dry riverbed). The walls originally had an inner and outer layer composed of rocks and slabs with earthen fill in between. Over the centuries, the fill has spilled over onto the walls, giving them a mound-like appearance. The Old Stone Fort was built nearly 2000 years ago by a local Middle Woodland culture.
