Description: 19th century painting of Urga (Ulaanbaatar) by Mongolian artist Balgan. Mineral pigments on cotton. Detail of the central Zuun Khuree temple complex in Urga. It was the biggest and most important part of Urga. Pilgrims would go around circling, praying full length on the ground as they went. Here we can see the long Bat Tsagaan temple built by Zanabazar in 1654 as a movable square temple built in the Mongolian architectural style. Also seen are the three-storey Maidar temple (1834) with a ger-shaped top floor, the movable golden-roofed Dechingalba temple (1739) and the Ger-Temple of Abtai Khan (1585). The central temples are surrounded by the residences and temples of the 30 monastic schools. All these temples were completely destroyed in 1937. Only one ger-shaped temple from 1778 survives as the Daschoilon Monastery. A more recent ger-shaped temple dating from 1903 was converted into the State Circus.
