Text Appearing Before Image: rris, before it was built, speaks in a letter to Colonel Clap-h;un, under date of June 25, 1756, of my plan of Fort Augusta intirely. (Seepage 674, Pennsylvania Archives, Vol. II., Old Series.) The mother of George III.was named Augusta, but he did not ascend the throne until October 25, 1760, fouryears after the fort was erected. And it may be noted in this connection, as a singu-lar historical fact, that the first authentic notice of London (Londinium) occurs inTacitus; about loo years after Ccesars invasion of Britain, it was taken by the Ro-mans under Claudius, called Augusta, and placed under a Roman administration. Inlater years a tradition prevailed that Major Burd had the fort named after his sisterAugusta, whom it was said resided in England. But it is more likely that it wascalled for the mother of George III., and that the name is of royal origin. 178 HISTOKV OV TlIK WEST HKANCII VALI.EV, duced in size from the original, will f^ixc^thc readera correct ideaof its appearance: Text Appearing After Image: DIAGRAM OF FORT AUGUSTA.
