Description: P.D. Gwaltney Jr.'s pet ham, thought to be the world's oldest ham. [1][2] In 1902, this ham was cured by the largest Smithfield ham producer, P.D. Gwaltney Jr. and Company. Gwaltney insured the ham, called it his Pet Ham and used it to demonstrate the special smoking techniques used in the creation of Smithfield ham. This 1902 specimen permanently resides in the Isle of Wight County Museum, Smithfield, Va., and the museum hosts a birthday party for it each July.
