Description: head of a juvenile Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) showing characteristic black and white stripes. Picture was taken from hand during rescue operation in summer 2006. A mixed flock of Podiceps cristatus and Tachybaptus ruficollis was trapped in one of the receding pools that remained when the intermittent Lake Cerknica (Slovenia) dried out almost entirely. Birds were captured and taken to the nearby stable portion of the lake where they were released.
