Image: Population density map of Java and Madura by subdistrict (kelurahan) (2022)
Description: Interactive detailed version available on Felt. Map of subdistricts (kelurahan, two levels below the city/regency) in the islands of Java and Madura, Indonesia, coloured by its population density as measured by person per square kilometres. Note that subdistrict data is unavailable in some areas, including Yogyakarta city and others, so district data (kecamatan) is used instead. Data and shapefile from the GIS repository of the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration in the Ministry of Home Affairs, data for Jakarta from the Population and Civil Registration Department of Jakarta (as of 2021), shapefile for Jakarta from the Geospatial Information Agency, made with Mapshaper and Inkscape. Note for urban areas: An "urban area" in this map is defined as a contiguous cluster of subdistricts which individually has a density of at least 2,500/km² and collectively amounts to a population of at least 100,000. This criteria is determined as to not clutter the map. Bold text indicates a density threshold of 5,000/km², instead of 2,500. An increase in the font size and circle stroke width indicates a greater number of people within the urban area, with the steps being 250,000, 1,000,000, and 10,000,000. Some urban areas are removed as it is deemed too close to another larger urban area or has no discernible downtown.
