Description: Spike Island - Botany Bay, Sholing Common, Southampton. Apparently the name comes from the early 19th century when convicts were kept here before being transported to Australia. According to legend they were chained to spikes to prevent their escaping thus "Spike Island". The road which runs next to the common is called Botany Bay Road
