The tunnel was designated a Civil Engineering Landmark by both the Canadian and the American Societies of Civil Engineers (CSCE and ASCE) in 1991. The tunnel is a designated US National Historic Landmark, and is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). NRHP reference number 70000684
