Description: The Roman Catholic Mortuary Chapel – Sandgate, Newcastle, New South Wales. The Gothic Style Chapel was erected in 1936 for the Roman Catholic Community and officially opened on the 12th May 1936 by The Bishop of Maitland Edmund Gleeson C.S.S.R. and dedicated the title of St. Joseph. It was built in the centre of a newly-opened section of Sandgate Cemetery on a slight rise overlooking the cemetery. The large side and end doors were intended to be opened for large congregations. The brick-built Chapel was designed by Architect Mr PJ Gannon of Hamilton, and the building contractor was Messes C & F Burg of East Maitland.
