Description: MODEL OF THE AMERICAN “TURTLE” WHICH WAS THE FIRST ATTEMPT AT A SUBMARINE; DESIGNED BY BUSHNELL & PRATT. IT ATTEMPTED TO SINK THE BRITISH SHIP “EAGLE” IN NEW YORK HARBOR DURING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR BUT FAILED TO CORRECTLY PLACE THE BOMB RESULTING IN A LARGE EXPLOSION WHICH DID NOT SINK THE VESSEL. SUBMARINE WAS A ONE MAN VESSEL AND THE BOMB EXTENDED FROM THE SHIP TO BE SCREWED INTO THE HULL OF THE TARGET SHIP.
