Description: Tonneau, Pierre Francois Joseph; The Expulsion of the Fellows, 1687; Magdalen College, University of Oxford The expulsion of the Fellows of Magdalen College, Oxford by James II in 1687. James II wished to nominate a Catholic president of the College, but this was resisted by the Fellows who nominated an Anglican president from their own number. For defying the King, most of the Fellows were expelled and James II replaced them with mainly Catholic or Catholic-sympathising nominees. This would be reversed on 25 October 1688 as William of Orange prepared to invade. The restoration of the Fellows is commemorated annually at the College during the Restoration Dinner. In 1884, the College commissioned this painting of the event, which depicts Fellows leaving the dining hall.
