Description: The Brisbane Courier Sat 21 June 1873 Telegraphic Gympie "The floods here have bene very high, the water having reach into Mary-street. The greater portion of the One-mile township is swamped; the whole of the Smithfield line is flooded, as likewise the Abyssinian Venture, Junction and Glanmire, Glanmire Extended, United Monkland and Galnmire and Columbia claims. The flood is now slowly subsiding. One hundred and forty-five tons of stone from No.5 South Monkland has yielded six hundred and thirty-two ounces. Nothing has as yet transpired with reference to the bank robbery." As to the bank robbery ..... The Brisbane Courier Tue 24 June 1873 Telegraphic Gympie "Rumours have been current during the last week or two of money being missing at the branch of the Bank of New South Wales at Gympie. The following statement in regards to this affair appears in the local journal of June 14 :- For a reason, which no doubt will be obvious, we were not in a position to refer in last issue to the fact that a very serious robbery had been committed at the local branch of the Bank of New South Wales; the circumstances had, however, been rumoured in town since Monday evening. It appears, from what we have been able to glean, that on Monday afternoon a deficiency amouting to £900 was found in the cash. It is supposed that the money, in large notes, must have been abstracted on Monday morning from off the bank counter whilst the accountant (Mr Croaker) had momentarily turned his back. As a considerable amount of business was transacted, and a large number of persons were in the bank on that day, the case will of course be a difficult one for the police to investigate. We are sorry to hear that there is yet no clue to the identity of the thief. There has been much regret emphatically expressed as regards Mr Croaker, on whom the responsibility of the loss rests, he having been in charge of the notes at the time of the occurence. There is not the slightest doubt, indeed, that were it permissible, public sympathy woul assume a substantial expression." Queensland State Archives Item ID 435742, Photographic material
