Description: The Maiwand Lion war memorial, Forbury Gardens, Reading, Berkshire, 30 June 2018. The statue was named after the Battle of Maiwand in the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880). It was erected in 1884 to commemorate the deaths of 329 men (out of 500) from the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment of Foot during the campaign. It is on the site of a hill fort built in 1150.
