Description: This was the city basin beside Grand Canal Harbour, Dublin 8. It was constructed in 1721-24 and fed originally by the Poddle. It was located close to the South Dublin Union (House of Industry). The basin was a fashionable resort for citizens of the time and there was an ornamental arch gateway and a landscaped promenade surrounding it. By 1735, the demand for water was so great that it was struggling to meet the needs via just the Poddle river. Eventually had to be fed by the new Grand Canal by a series of gates and sluices. Construction of the Grand Canal began in 1757, and reached the harbour here in 1785, before it joined the River Liffey at Ringsend in 1790-97.

The illustration here is from Charles Brooking's map of Dublin of 1728.
