Description: Miniature painting of The Three Brothers jewel, commissioned by the city of Basel around 1500. The Brothers were created in 1389 and consisted of three rectangular red spinels in a triangular arrangement, adorned with four round white pearls, and a deep blue diamond in the middle. The painting served as an inventory, but also as an advertisement to potential buyers, and was drawn at a scale of 1:1. The jewel was acquired by banker Jakob Fugger in 1504, who in turn sold it to England, where it became part of the crown jewels. It was prominently worn by Elizabeth I and James I, but pawned or sold around 1645. The painting is now in the Basel Historical Museum, while the jewel remains lost.
