Description: The Flodden Wall, directly ahead in the photograph, was begun in 1513 following the Scots' disastrous defeat at Flodden, when fears of an imminent English invasion were at their height. This wall enclosed the town but excluded the grounds of Heriot's Hospital, directly behind the wall on the right. This is the Telfer Wall, built as an extension to the Flodden Wall after 1618 to include the grounds of Heriot's Hospital and the Greyfriars Kirk within the town's defences.
