Description: Solid waste in Mulago, Kampala. In those heaps of solid waste which are piling up nearly everywhere in the slum areas, you often find "Kadingos", the flying toilets. Besides that the solid waste consists of a variety of plastics (bottles, packaging and plastic bags) and organic waste. There are efforts to recycle plastic bottles. The company "Plastic Recycling Industries" is active in that business. About 75% of the weight of Kampala's waste are organic (Kampala Integrated Environmental Management Project, 2009). The Kampala City Council has a fleet of several waste trucks which transport waste irregularly to a landfill. Another very common solution for solid waste management is the incineration of smaller heaps in the slum areas.
