Description: The English Building is a historic structure located on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. It was designed by McKim, Mead, and White and dedicated in 1905. It was originally known as the Women's Building because it served as the women's dormitory; it also had a gymnasium and a pool. A 1913 addition was designed by W. Carbys Zimmerman, and a 1924 addition was designed by James M. White. In 1946, when the building was occupied predominantly occupied by the home economics department, it was renamed Bevier Hall (not to be confused with a later campus building of the same name). The English Building acquired its current name when it became the home of the English department in 1956. The atrium is located in the building's former courtyard. According to the blueprints, the courtyard was later enclosed to become a gym. The classrooms on either side and the wide wraparound walkway were added later.
