Description: Parandja, a robe that was women's wear, detail. Displayed at the Museum of Applied Arts in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Early 20th century. Velvet, silk threads and handmade embroidery. The robe almost completely covered the wearer. The Soviets banned the parandja in 1927 in an effort to stop Islamic customs. Nonetheless, it took many more years for the parandja to completely disappear.
