Description: The first page of Justice William. O. Douglas' draft of the per curiam decision in Griffin v. County School Board of Prince Edward County, 377 U.S. 218 (1964). Prince Edward County, located in the U.S. state of Virginia, had refused to permit its public schools to be racially integrated in 1959. It closed its schools instead. African American parents of schoolchildren in the country sued, arguing this violated their rights to due process and equal protection of the laws under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Supreme Court unanimously agreed, and ordered the schools opened in May 1964.
