Description: Snowshoeing to Pilot Rock, one of the most prominent features of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument in the southern Cascade Range, March 9, 2019. BLM photos: Bob Wick Pilot Rock rises to an elevation of 5,910 feet and is visible from northern California as well as parts of the Rogue Valley. The volcanic plug mountain, a geologic description for what is left after a volcano erodes away, resides within the Soda Mountain Wilderness. The base of Pilot Rock can be reached via a moderate hiking trail that climbs through meadows and old growth forest, said Wick, a wilderness specialist for the BLM who captured these recent photos. “Scrambling to the top of Pilot Rock is much more difficult and going with someone who has scaled the rock before is recommended,” said Wick.
