Description: A view of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. Originally known as the Hemicycle, this ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery was opened in 1932. Along the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the George Washington Memorial Parkway (then known as the Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway), it was constructed in celebration of the bicentennial of George Washington's birthday. Unfinished, unused, and in disrepair by the early 1980s, it was transformed into the Women in Military Service for America Memorial and opened to the public on October 20, 1997. This image shows two of the access stairs which were pierced through panels in the front of the Hemicycle in 1997. An original apse, as yet undecorated with artwork, remains between them. Grass has replaced stonework between the stairwells, and a low, black marble meditative bench exists in front of each grassy area.
