History of Imperial Glass
Starting the Company
The Imperial Glass Company began in 1901. It was started by a person named Edward Muhleman. The company started making glass products in 1904. They made many different kinds of handmade glass items. These items were sold all over the world. Most of their glass was made using a method called pressed glass. This means the glass was pressed into molds to create patterns.
A Big Factory
The factory on 29th Street was very large. People said it was one of the biggest glass factories in one building. Imperial Glass made many popular products. Their most famous product line was called the "Candlewick" series. This series was so well-known that a street in Bellaire was even named after it!
Challenges and Changes
In the early 1970s, the company faced some difficult times. It was struggling financially. A company called Lenox helped Imperial Glass. Imperial then started making glass for general use. However, there was not enough demand for their products. Because of this, the company eventually closed down in 1984.
The Museum Today
The building on Belmont Street was later turned into a museum. This museum is now home to many pieces of glass made by the company. It also shares the long history of the Imperial Glass Company. Visitors can learn all about how the glass was made and see the beautiful items.
