The Imperial Hotel in Atlanta is a very old and important building. It was built a long time ago, in 1910. This eight-story building is special because it's one of the few tall buildings left from a time when Atlanta was growing fast.
The hotel looks like a "Chicago school" building. This means it has a flat roof and brick walls with many windows arranged in a grid pattern. Inside, it even has two old Otis elevators! The building was empty for a while starting in 1980. A few years later, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list helps protect important buildings. Later, it was turned into homes for people who needed affordable places to live. In 2012, it was being fixed up again.

The Imperial Hotel: A Historic Atlanta Building
Its Story Through the Years
The Imperial Hotel was finished in 1910. At that time, many new buildings were going up in Atlanta. The hotel helped the city grow bigger, especially along Peachtree Street.
In 1913, the hotel was quite fancy. It cost about $300,000 to build. It had 119 rooms and 59 private bathrooms. Guests could choose different ways to pay for their stay, either including meals or just the room.
Over the years, parts of the hotel were changed. In 1953, the first floor was updated. Its old Tudor arches were replaced with a new entrance. Then, after a fire in 1968, the first floor was remodeled again.
In 1980, a person named John Portman bought the building. After he bought it, the hotel became empty. By 1990, people who didn't have homes started staying there.
A New Purpose for the Imperial Hotel
In 1996, the building got a new life. Atlanta was getting ready to host the Olympics. So, the Imperial Hotel was changed into homes for people who needed low-cost housing. This helped clean up the city for the big event.
In 2014, the building was fixed up even more. It was given a new name: The Commons at Imperial Hotel. Now, it has 90 apartments that help people who used to be homeless or have special needs. Organizations like CaringWorks, INC., Columbia Residential, and National Church Residences work together to own and manage these homes. They make sure the building provides safe and affordable places to live.
