Implication and inference facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Implication and inference are two words that are connected but mean the opposite. Think of them as two sides of the same coin when it comes to understanding hidden messages!

To imply something means to suggest it without actually saying it out loud. It's like giving a hint.

What Does 'Imply' Mean?

When someone implies something, they are sending a message that isn't directly spoken. They might use their words, their tone of voice, or even their actions to give a hint.

For example:

  • If your friend says, "That's a really interesting shirt you're wearing," they might be implying that they don't actually like your shirt, even though they didn't say "I don't like your shirt."
  • If a teacher asks, "Have you finished your homework yet?", they are implying that you should have done it or that it's important to get it done.

What Does 'Infer' Mean?

To infer means to figure out the hidden message or the suggestion that someone else is implying. It's like being a detective and solving a puzzle to understand what's really meant.

For example, if your friend says, "That's a really interesting shirt you're wearing," and you realize they probably don't like it, you have made an inference. You figured out their hidden meaning.

How Implication and Inference Work Together

These two ideas always go hand-in-hand. One person implies, and another person infers.

  • The person who makes the suggestion or gives the hint implies it.
  • The person who understands the suggestion or figures out the hint infers it. You can also say they "draw an inference."
  • Inference always happens after an implication. First, someone implies something, and then you infer what they meant.

Beyond Just Words

While implying often involves words, inferring doesn't always have to be spoken. Sometimes, you can infer something from a non-verbal response. This means someone's actions or expressions can show they understood the hidden message.

For example, if someone says, "I'm so excited for the test!" but their voice sounds sarcastic and they roll their eyes, they are implying they are not excited at all. If you then laugh because you understand their sarcasm, you have inferred their true feelings.
