"In This Corner of the World" is a Japanese animated movie from 2016. It's a wartime drama based on a popular manga (Japanese comic book). The movie tells the story of a young woman named Suzu. Her voice was played by an actress named Non. The director, Katabuchi, really liked her soft voice for the role.

Changes from the Original Story

This movie was made from a manga, so some parts are a bit different. For example, at the start of the story, Suzu meets a kidnapper while delivering seaweed. In the manga, this happens in January 1934. But in the movie, the date was changed to December 1933.

The filmmakers wanted to show a city busy with Christmas celebrations. Also, Japan's crown prince was born on December 23rd that year. So, they thought a festive mood would last into the new year. That's why they changed the date.

Another difference is that a character named Rin, who was important in the manga, doesn't appear as much in the movie. Also, the movie doesn't show a love triangle between Shusaku, Rin, and Suzu.

Movie Storyline

Suzu is an eighteen-year-old girl who loves to draw. In December 1943, she is helping her grandmother make seaweed in Kusatsu. Suddenly, she gets news that a man wants to marry her. She rushes home and peeks at a young man through a window. He is Shusaku Hojo from Kure, but Suzu doesn't know him.

In February 1944, Suzu marries Shusaku. Her new life begins. Her husband is kind, but Suzu's sister-in-law is strict. Even though it's wartime and supplies are low, Suzu uses her humor to get by. She slowly becomes accepted by the Hojo family and their neighbors.

However, in 1945, an atomic bomb is dropped on Hiroshima. Suzu loses something very important to her. After the war ends, she decides that Kure is where she belongs. She continues to live her life there.

Main Characters

Suzu Hojo

Suzu Hojo is the main character of the movie. She was born in Eba, Hiroshima. Suzu loves drawing very much. When she was a child, she had a strange experience meeting "Bakemon." She got married at 18 years old. She has a younger sister named Sumi Urano. They have been close since they were little.

Shusaku Hojo

Shusaku Hojo is Suzu's husband. He first met her when he was a child.

Keiko Kuromura

Keiko Kuromura is Shusaku's sister. She moved back to her family home with her daughter, Harumi.

Harumi

Harumi is five years old. Unlike her mother, she really likes Suzu.

Tetsu Mizuhara

Tetsu Mizuhara was Suzu's classmate when they were in elementary school.
