In the Night Kitchen is a famous picture book written and drawn by Maurice Sendak. It was first published in 1970. The story is about a young boy named Mickey who dreams he falls out of his bed and into a giant kitchen.
In his dream, Mickey meets three bakers. They are making a cake for the morning. Mickey helps them by finding milk. The book has a very dream-like, or surreal, feel. This means things happen in a strange, imaginative way, like in a dream.
Maurice Sendak said this book is part of a special group of three books. These books are about how kids grow up. In the Night Kitchen is about a toddler. Where the Wild Things Are is about a preschooler. Outside Over There is about an older child.
The book won a Caldecott Honor award in 1971. This is a very important award for children's picture books. Later, in 1987, the book was made into a short animated film. It was directed by Gene Deitch.
