Beach on Inchcruin

Inchcruin is a beautiful island located in Loch Lomond, a famous lake in Scotland. It's important not to mix it up with another island called Creinch, which sometimes gets called "Inchcroin" by mistake.

Where is Inchcruin?

Inchcruin is part of a group of islands found just south of a village called Luss. This island stretches about three-quarters of a mile long. Its highest point is around 50 feet above the water.

The name "Inchcruin" comes from the Scottish Gaelic words meaning "round island." However, the island isn't actually round; it has a more uneven, jagged shape. Inchcruin features a few sandy beaches and is covered with trees, but it also has some open, grassy fields.

The Geggles Channel

A very narrow waterway, called the Geggles, separates Inchcruin from its neighbor, Inchmoan. This channel is only about one or two feet deep. Sometimes, if the water is low enough, you can even walk between the two islands!

Inchcruin's Past

Inchcruin has an interesting history. In the 18th century, the island was used as a special place for people who needed care for their mental health.

There is one house on the island that is about 200 years old. In the past, people lived in this house and farmed the land on Inchcruin. Today, this old house is used as a peaceful holiday getaway.

Visitors to Inchcruin

A travel writer named H.V. Morton visited Loch Lomond in the 1930s. He briefly mentioned Inchcruin in his writings, though he accidentally spelled its name "Inchcruim."

According to the National Records of Scotland, Inchcruin is considered an inhabited island. However, no one was living there permanently during the 2001 or 2011 population counts.
