A Look Back: How Index Got Its Name
The area we know as Index today has an interesting history. Before it was called Index, it was known as Johnsville. The name "Index" came about in 1898. This was when a Post Office was opened there.
The General Store and Peyton Parker
A local merchant named Peyton Parker played a big role in the community's history. A few years before the Post Office opened, he built a General Store. This store was located at the corner of Kings Highway and Salem Church Road. The building where the store once stood is still there today.
The General Store was a very important place for the local farmers and residents. It sold almost everything people needed! You could find clothes, furniture, and even seeds for planting crops. It was a central spot for shopping and meeting neighbors.
The Post Office and Its Closing
The Post Office that gave Index its name operated for many years. However, it eventually closed its doors in 1965. The General Store followed a few years later. Even though the Post Office and store are gone, their history remains a key part of the community's story.
